With older children, you might want to locate any shops of interest. Or, if you are more adventurous, you may have time to take a shuttle train from one terminal to another. (However, keep an eye on the time!). If you are stopping for a day or more en route, then obviously you will need to sort out, among other things, your accommodation and travel to and from the airport.
